Breast Reconstruction Surgery
What is it?
Breast reconstruction restores and rebuilds the breast shape after a mastectomy. It may be performed following removal of the whole breast (mastectomy) or part of the breast (lumpectomy). The aim is to reconstruct a breast of similar size and shape to your original breast. However, they won’t be identical.
Breast reconstruction can be approached differently. It can start during the mastectomy (immediate breast reconstruction), or in a separate operation after the mastectomy (delayed breast reconstruction), to allow recovery time and strength rebuilding after surgery. This choice should be discussed with a surgeon since it also depends on factors such as the type and stage of cancer, personal preference or the treatment.
One-Stage Breast Reconstruction
Immediately after your general surgeon removes any cancerous breast tissue, your plastic surgeon will place your breast implant(s). This type of procedure is an option if you’ve had a nipple-sparing mastectomy, meaning the nipple is not removed and most of the breast skin is intact.
